Professor Goodman studies in particular the political, social and religious history of the Jews in the Roman Empire, but he is also the author of a study of variety within Judaism and a history of Judaism down to modern times as well as a number of books on the Jewish revolts against Rome and on the rabbis in the Roman world.
He has taught in Oxford since 1986. He was appointed by the University to the Readership in Jewish Studies in 1991 and served as President of the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies from 2014 to 2018. He has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 1996.
