I was Warden of Keble College from 1994 to 2010 and Professor of Late Antique and Byzantine History, as well as a Pro-Vice-Chancellor. I held a Leverhulme Emeritus Fellowship in the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies in 2011-13 and was chair of the Oxford Centre for Byzantine Research from 2010 to 2020. I have been President of the Council for British Research in the Levant (CBRL) and am currently President of the Society for the Promotion of Byzantine Studies.
